Cong Dam Area 2026: Coral, Mangroves and Lagoons in Halong Bay’s Quiet South-East
The Cong Do – Cong Dam area lies in the remote south-east of Halong Bay, about 25 km from Bai Chay, on official route VHL4. Cong Do island, rising to about 172 m, has one of the bay’s main coral reefs, while Cong Dam is known for mangroves, enclosed lagoons for kayaking and a small fishing community. It is reached on longer cruises, usually of three days, that operators sell as Bai Tu Long Bay trips.
Good to know (checked October 2026): Cong Dam and Cong Do are neighbouring but different names; both lie on Halong Bay route VHL4 under the Ha Long Bay Management Board. History of the Area
Cong Do lies near the routes of the old Van Don trading port, which from 1149 was Dai Viet’s main gateway for foreign trade. A 2008 Tuoi Tre report described remains linked to the port on the island’s south-east side. Today only a very small fishing community lives around Cong Dam, and it continues to shrink as younger people move ashore.

1. Kayak into the lagoons
Usually 45–60 minutes with a guide; some lagoons can be entered only at certain tides.
2. Swim at a quiet beach
In warm months, often combined with a beach lunch on longer itineraries.
3. See the mangroves and coral
Look for mangrove edges along the shore. Snorkelling is not routinely offered, but clear days show the reefs from the boat.
4. Visit the fishing community
