Halong Bay 2026: The Complete Guide to Vietnam’s UNESCO Bay, Its Routes, Caves and Cruises

Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage seascape of about 1,969 limestone islands spread over roughly 1,553 km² of the Gulf of Tonkin in Quang Ninh province, northern Vietnam, about 2.5–3 hours from Hanoi by expressway. It was inscribed in 1994 and extended in 2023 as Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago, and it is explored by boat on eight official sightseeing routes that visit caves, a summit viewpoint, beaches and floating fishing villages.

Status (checked October 2026): The bay is open all year. Since March 2025 the sightseeing routes are officially named VHL1–VHL8. Boats operate under Quang Ninh’s Decision 43/2024 schedule (summer 1 April–31 October, winter 1 November–31 March) and stop sailing whenever the authorities close the bay for storms. The seaplane service over the bay ended permanently on 1 April 2026.

Is Halong Bay worth it? Yes. It is Vietnam’s most famous landscape and still one of the most dramatic seascapes in Asia. Spend at least one night on the water: day trips lose half their time on the road. The classic route is busy at midday, so if you want space, consider adding or choosing Lan Ha Bay or the quieter eastern side of the bay.

What Makes Halong Bay Special

The world’s most extensive sea-invaded tower karst

UNESCO lists the bay under two criteria: (vii) for its exceptional natural beauty and (viii) because it is the most extensive example of marine-invaded tower karst in the world. Its islands are the tops of limestone towers (fenglin) and clusters (fengcong) that were drowned when sea levels rose after the last ice age.

Caves you can walk through

The islands are riddled with caves of three types: remnants of old phreatic caves such as Sung Sot and Thien Cung, old karst foot caves, and marine notch caves cut by waves at sea level, such as Luon Cave.

A living culture on the water

For centuries fishing families lived on boats and floating houses in sheltered lagoons. Most moved ashore from 2013–2014, but villages such as Cua Van and Vung Vieng remain part of the visitor experience.

Rich, little-known biodiversity

The Management Board records nearly 3,000 species across about ten ecosystems, including 507 plant species on the islands, 110 coral species and endemic plants such as the Ha Long palm (Livistona halongensis). Officials say only a fraction of the bay’s natural value has been fully studied.

Geology: How Halong Bay Was Formed

The limestone formed on an ancient sea floor over hundreds of millions of years. Uplift and tropical weathering then carved it into towers and cones over about 20 million years, and most of its caves formed between roughly 2 million and 11,000 years ago. When the sea rose after the last glacial period, it flooded the valleys between the towers and created today’s maze of islands. Look for the wave-cut notches at the base of the islands: they mark ancient and present sea levels.

History and Legend

The descending dragon

Legend says that when Vietnam was threatened by invaders from the sea, the Jade Emperor sent a mother dragon and her children to defend it. They spat out jewels and jade that became a wall of islands, wrecking the enemy fleet. The mother dragon descended at Ha Long and her children at Bai Tu Long, which is where both names come from.

Prehistoric cultures

Archaeologists have found traces of the Soi Nhu culture (roughly 18,000–7,000 years ago), the Cai Beo culture and the Ha Long culture (about 5,000–3,500 years ago) in caves and on islands around the bay, showing that people have lived here for many thousands of years.

Trade and battles

From 1149 Van Don, at the bay’s north-eastern edge, was Dai Viet’s main trading port. The nearby Bach Dang River saw three famous naval victories, in 938, 981 and 1288, when General Tran Hung Dao used stakes planted in the riverbed to destroy the Mongol-Yuan fleet; local tradition links that story to Dau Go Cave.

Protection

The bay became a National Monument in 1962, a UNESCO World Heritage site on 17 December 1994 and a Special National Monument in 2009. In September 2023 UNESCO extended the site to include the Cat Ba Archipelago in Hai Phong, making it Vietnam’s first inter-provincial natural World Heritage site, and in August 2024 the International Union of Geological Sciences named it one of its 100 geological heritage sites.

1. Sung Sot Cave (VHL2)

Every boat must follow a licensed route. Routes were announced under Decision 2119/QĐ-UBND (July 2024) and renamed VHL1–VHL8 by Resolution 51/2025/NQ-HĐND; VHL6–VHL8 started on 1 May 2025.

Safety on Halong Bay

Sudden summer storms are the main risk. In July 2025 the day boat Vinh Xanh 58 capsized in a thunderstorm with heavy loss of life. Since then Quang Ninh has tightened rules: crews must give a safety briefing before departure, patrols run around the clock and storm-warning systems are being added. Book licensed cruises, listen to crew briefings, wear a life jacket when told, and accept a cancellation when the bay is closed.
