Luon Cave 2026: Kayak or Bamboo Boat into Halong Bay’s Hidden Lagoon
Luon Cave is a low sea tunnel at the north-east tip of Bo Hon Island in Halong Bay, about 13 km from Tuan Chau and 1 km from Sung Sot Cave. It leads into a lagoon completely enclosed by limestone cliffs, and you can only pass through by kayak or rowed bamboo boat; macaques often appear on the rocks. It is on route VHL2 with Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top Island.
Good to know (checked October 2026): Luon Cave is a tidal tunnel, not a show cave: there are no stalactites and no lighting. At high tide the roof drops to roughly 2.5 m above the water and you duck to pass. Typhoon Yagi destroyed the local kayak and rowing-boat services in September 2024; they have since been rebuilt and operate normally.

Story and Name
Hang Luồn means the cave you pass through. Fishermen gave it the name because boats must slip under the low arch, especially at high tide. Geologists class it as a marine notch cave: waves and tides cut into the foot of the limestone at sea level until they broke through to the lagoon behind. Things to Do at Luon Cave
1. Kayak through the tunnel
Two-person kayaks with life jackets are provided. Paddle through, circle the lagoon along the cliffs, and return; most cruises allow 30–45 minutes.
2. Take a bamboo boat
Local rowers, mostly women from former fishing families, take a few passengers at a time in traditional boats. It is the best choice for families with small children, older travellers and photographers.
3. Look for the macaques
Scan the cliff edges and trees, especially in the morning and late afternoon. Keep your distance and keep food out of sight.

The light is softest before 09:00 and after 15:00, when the cliffs reflect in the still water.
